Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding
is the healthiest way to feed a newborn baby, and this has been
proven many times. While there is a constant battle going on between
breastfeeding mothers, and those in the public who are against it,
there is no debate that it is the healthiest way to feed a newborn.
This is especially true when your baby is born prematurely. Mother’s
breast milk offers much more nutrition, as well as parts of her
immunity, that formulas don’t quite have.
When first beginning to breast feed, you may soon realize that it
doesn’t always come as naturally as you might expect. The
baby may have problems latching on, your milk may not express correctly,
or a variety of other problems could arise. In most hospitals, there
is a lactation consultant, a nurse or a midwife to help you through
the first few feedings. There are also consultants that you can
call on later if the need ever arises.
There are also a variety of places to find information about breastfeeding,
including any questions or concerns you may have. You can start
by contacting your baby’s pediatrician, or your local WIC
(Women, Infants and Children) office. They can offer discussions
and pamphlets about breastfeeding, as well as support and answers
to any questions you may have.
