Hair care for Babies
When
your baby is first born, you may not even think that hair care is
necessary. But, since many babies get cradle cap, it is actually
important that you take the time to try to prevent this from happening.
Similar to the way that skin on a newborn gets dried out, a baby’s
scalp will often become dry and flaky (similar to a really bad case
of dandruff). Since most babies have very little or no hair at all,
many parents apply baby lotion or baby oil to their baby’s
head after bathing to help keep the scalp moist.
The baby oil can help if your baby has already developed cradle
cap as well. It can help loosen the flakes, so that you can use
a stiff-bristled baby brush to brush the flakes out. Keep in mind
that a stiff-bristled baby brush is not the same as a stiff-bristled
adult brush. It is still much softer, and its bristles are very
close together. This is the kind that many hospitals give to new
parents (the little rectangular shaped brush with no handle).
If your baby has developed cradle cap, you should
rub their head often, especially if they seem fussy for no apparent
reason. Cradle cap can become itchy and bothersome for babies. Rubbing
their scalp can often ease some of this itchiness. If your baby
continues to have flakes as they get older, you should take her
to your pediatrician to find out if it is something you should use
a medicated shampoo on.
