Learning by Repetition for Babies & Toddlers
There
are two key ways in which babies and toddlers learn: exploration
and repetition. Repetition simply means that things are repeated
often enough for babies to learn from them. This may include repetition
with their schedules, with songs and more. Since repetition is a
very important part of a baby’s learning process, this means
that the more often something is repeated, the more quickly the
baby will learn it.
This is why young toddlers can sing their entire ABC’s. They
actually have no idea what they are saying, they simply have heard
it so much that they now have it memorized. And, while some people
may say that it is a useless clue into intelligence, it does provide
them a base with which to work from as they get older and into school.
Repetition can be useful in many other situations as well. It’s
not just about memorizing letters or words to a song; it can also
be about what it takes to live everyday. Something as simple as
watching you put your key in the doorknob at home to unlock the
door can spark an interest. Your baby will not likely try to take
your key and unlock the door until they have seen you do this a
few times. These kinds of actions help give your little one some
concept of what you are doing and why you do it in a variety of
situations. This is also why you should start talking to, singing
to, and playing with your baby at an early age. The repetition of
words heard by your baby on a regular basis can help your baby learn
to speak more quickly and better than if he didn’t have that
repetition.
