Words and Babies
One
of a parent’s biggest concerns with babies is that they don’t
use enough words, or that they have trouble forming some words when
they first begin to talk. It is not something that you should worry
about, though, until your baby becomes well past his toddler years.
Many babies, when first beginning to talk, say words incorrectly.
This is very common and completely natural. It may be that your
baby leaves off the first letter of some words, or that she pronounces
a certain letter incorrectly. For example, she may say “tick”
for “stick” or “yeyow” for “yellow.”
It is important to not criticize or laugh at the way that your baby
says certain words. You should wait until your baby has a decent
grasp of language before you start trying to teach her the correct
pronunciation. When you do feel that she is ready to learn correct
speech, you should work with her slowly and offer to show her how
to speak the word right without being critical. If she feels that
she is being criticized, she will likely clam up and it will be
that much more difficult to teach her.
