Temper Tantrums

Temper Tantrums in Toddlers
It
can be very upsetting when you’re faced with a baby who screams
hysterically when he can't have what he wants, but you will probably
find it easier to give him the help he needs if you don't think
of him as having a "temper." All babies and toddlers derive
a major part of their happiness and sense of worth from getting
what they want. What they wish for is what they need, because having
their desires satisfied shows them that they are loved and cherished.
So it is understandable that for the time being your baby will become
upset and cry when you frustrate his wishes.
If you don't expect too much of him too soon,
he will gradually outgrow this emotional dependence on getting what
he wants. You will foster him emotional development by granting
his wishes as often as possible, because in this way you will help
him to maintain the stable sense of competence and self-worth that
is so crucial to his healthy development. At moments when your baby
can't have what he wants because his wish is dangerous or impractical,
you will do him a great service if you can be understanding of his
distress. Comfort him until he feels better, and, if possible, interest
him in an alternative adventure. Your caring response to his tears
will help him learn that while he cannot always have the thing he
wants, he can always count on your love and kindness.
