Whiney Toddlers
At
around 12 months, babies begin to establish their independence.
At this time, routine elements of your day, such as diaper changes,
turn into scrimmages. This happens because a world of independence
opens up just as your baby begins to learn to walk. With all of
these changes, your daughter or son will begin to feel ambivalent.
He or she wants to be independent, but are overcome with all the
new choices. This time period is a touch point — not only
are the baby’s motor skills changing at a rapid rate, she
or he is also developing emotionally. It's a challenging time for
babies and their parents.
Try not to take your little ones whining personally
if you can help it. Your negative reaction may only reinforce the
behavior. If you can ignore it, the baby is most likely give up
the whining, but will find other ways to drive you crazy. Learning
to push your buttons is part of their learning process.
When you find yourself getting very frustrated,
take a deep breath and step out of the room for a few minutes to
calm yourself down (after making sure, of course, that your child
is safely in her or his crib or playpen). Remind yourself that your
baby is going through a phase, and that it will pass.
