BST,
or bovine somatotrophin, is a protein hormone that is found in cows.
It is produced and secreted by the pituitary gland and is important
to growth, development and other bodily functions. All animals,
including humans, produce a hormone similar to BST.
In the 1930s, it was discovered that by injecting
BST into lactating cows, dairy farmers could increase their milk
supply. Ever since then, there has been concern over the safety
of BST for humans.
Studies have shown that BST is safe for human
consumption and the FDA has approved it without any limitations.
While pregnant women might be concerned because there are so many
chemicals and products that they have to avoid, milk is an important
part of their diet. Any BST found in milk is perfectly safe for
pregnant women and their unborn children.
