When
you first hold your infant you can’t imagine that he or she
will ever be anything but precious and sweet. You will find within
the first few moments that your baby has a personality and that
personality will dictate his or her behavior!
Understanding the behaviors that babies exhibit
will help you know how to respond to the behavior and guide your
little one to use their positive behaviors and to change their negative
behaviors.
Following is a list of behaviors, see if you recognize any of
them!
Whiney
Separation Anxiety
Neediness
Biting
Fear of water
Crying all the time
Screaming
Temper Tantrums
Putting things in her
mouth
There are good explanations for these types of
negative behaviors. Mostly, your baby isn’t trying to get
under your skin. They usually need something or need to be taught
an important lesson. During these times its best to stay calm and
in control of the situation even if that means making sure your
baby is safe from harm and leaving the room for a few minutes to
catch your breath! If your baby sees that you aren’t loosing
it he or she will know that his bad behavior isn’t getting
the response they want. It will be hard to do this the first couple
of times but hopefully it will make the bad behavior more calm by
degrees.
Keep in mind that your baby also has good behaviors. These include:
Kisses and hugs
Laughing at simple pleasures
Cuddling
Sharing
Smiling at just the right moment
Reaching out for your hand
Petting an animal softly
Feeding him or her self!
And
Sleeping calmly
Babyhood is a joyful time for families and those
close to the family of the little one. In order to build a relationship
of trust and respect with your baby you need to acknowledge his
or her feelings and behaviors as valid and deal with them accordingly.
