Despite
all the anticipation parents feel before their baby is born, and
even though parents try to imagine what living with their newborn
will be like nothing can completely preparing your for the arrival
of your baby. Another human being is now dependent upon you for
survival. More than anything else, you want to be the best parent
possible.
Your awareness of your baby's dependency and your desire to be a
good parent will together be a great source of energy and a great
source of stress. Both are part of being a parent.
Being a good parent means more than “liking
children.” Being a good parent involves surrendering oneself
completely to the fact that life will never be the same after your
baby is born. It means giving up a part of yourself and giving up
or putting off some selfish desires in order to make a better life
for your baby.
Being a good parent means you need to be there
for your baby all the time. Your baby is helpless without you. There
is a natural bond between parents and their off spring that can’t
easily be broken. Your baby will want and need you to be near, to
give him food or give her comfort. This is the responsibility you
take on when you have a baby.
How do you care for your baby? A lot of baby care
is common sense. Your baby has a wet diaper, change it. Your baby
is hungry, feed him. Your baby’s clothes are dirty, wash them
and put on clean ones! Some things to remember to do are scheduled
Doctors visits, socialization through playgroups or simply taking
her to the park and encouraging her developing mind.
It is a good idea for even the most confident
individuals to take a parenting class before the baby is born. Parenting
classes are available at hospitals, community centers and even some
churches. A parenting class will teach you the basics so that when
you bring home your bundle of joy you won’t be completely
overwhelmed.
Most importantly your baby needs and wants to
be held, to be looked at and talked to. Many people today are teaching
their babies sign language. It has been proven that babies as young
as 3-5 months can communicate non-verbally. Babies have a lot to
say! Their world his expanding by leaps and bounds daily and they
are happy to share in their excitement if you will take the time
to “listen.”
If you see your baby as more than just a doll
to be played with on occasion you will find great joy in building
a bond that will last beyond this lifetime. You’ll be shaping
another human beings views on life, love, and faith.
