At
a time when their bodies are changing drastically without their
control, many pregnant women turn to beauty products and fashionable
clothing to keep them feeling pretty. Coloring or bleaching your
hair can give the finishing touches and highlight the features of
your face. But, because of the chemicals involved, you may wonder
whether it is safe for your developing baby.
Many physicians will tell you to avoid hair dyes
during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester when the
baby is experiencing much neural development. This is because some
of the chemicals used in the hair coloring process are absorbed
through your scalp and can be passed through to your baby. But there
really hasn’t been much study on the safety of hair dyes.
The few studies done show that they really don’t pose any
risk to a fetus. Only a very small amount of the chemicals used
are absorbed through the scalp and even less of them enter the placenta.
Because of this, most experts believe that hair coloring is perfectly
safe during pregnancy.
If the contradictions concern you, you can simply
avoid coloring your hair or you can take precautions to lessen your
exposure to the chemicals present in hair dyes. Instead of dying
or bleaching all of your hair, you may consider putting in highlights
instead. Another possibility is temporary hair colors that wash
out over time. These alternatives contain fewer chemicals than traditional
hair colors. There are also many home remedies that can help to
give luster to the color you already have. Whatever you decide to
do, there are plenty of options available to keep you feeling your
best.
