“Daddy.”
It’s a term ever endearing the ears of any man lucky enough
to hear a tiny voice say it to him. Many times Mama gets all the
advice and attention before and immediately following the baby’s
birth, and deservedly so! However this often leaves dads wondering
what their role is.
The importance of the role of fathers cannot be
overstated. In recent years that role has been given a diminished
sense in the media and in the American society. But a dads presence,
both physically and emotionally, has a lasting and determinant effect
on the baby for the rest of the little one’s life. Before
the birth of their first child many couples have established roles
and duties around the house. However, after the birth of a child,
it is important for new dads to assume new responsibilities and
duties. Whether it is washing the dishes, vacuuming, or cooking
dinner, it is important for new dads to help out in anyway possible.
The new mother will appreciate the help, especially in light of
the fact that she has recently assumed responsibility for many new
tasks associated with childcare.
New dads are sometimes skittish about caring for
their baby. This is natural but they should also realize that they
are now the baby’s protector and teacher. Many new dads decline
to take part in several activities associated with parenthood because
they are unsure of what they are doing. As with a new sport or any
type of new activity, there are two fundamental ways to learn -
to observe the activity and to try it for oneself! Take for instance
the example of holding a baby. Many new dads refuse to pick up their
newborn because they are hesitant about the proper way to hold the
child. In spite of their inexperience, new dads should start by
observing how their wife or the doctor holds the child. Once they
have an idea of the proper technique, they should give it a shot
for themselves, it’s a skill much like riding a bicycle, once
you know how you can forget and you just want to keep doing it.
Which is a hobby mom’s can get behind!
After nine months of pregnancy and giving birth
to a child, many recent mothers have emotional variability. Extreme
highs and lows occur randomly and frequently after childbirth. Consequently,
it is important for new dads to be sensitive to these emotions and
feelings. Furthermore, it is important for them to be supportive
and to listen to the new mom's concerns. Beyond the changes in mom's
emotions, new dads may find that their own feelings and emotions
have become unpredictable. This is quite common for new dads, in
that the drastic changes in their lives commonly result in erratic
moods.
As noted, mood shifts and erratic feelings are
rather common both for new dads and moms after childbirth. However,
this should not continue for an extended period after childbirth.
If either parent continues to experience abnormal feelings and cannot
regain emotional stability, it is recommended to speak with a professional.
