Most
people would agree that the best place for young children is at
home with one of their parents. While this is the ideal, it is often
impossible to accomplish with most families needing two wage-earners
to make ends meet. If staying at home with your children is not
an option, you will have to consider daycare. In this case, it is
best to start looking at your options well before you need them.
Finding a reliable daycare provider that you and your children can
trust and feel comfortable with is absolutely essential.
In order to find the perfect daycare provider,
you should evaluate each possibility closely. Don’t be lured
into one just because it has the latest and greatest toys and gadgets.
These things have little to do with the quality of care they provide.
Instead, focus first on the environment of the care center, or home.
Is it clean, inviting and safe? Is it child friendly with lots of
room to move around and play? Are there plenty of toys and activities
to keep your child entertained?
If the environment meets your standards, then
you will want to get to know the staff. Find out what the child
to adult ratio is and what kind of turnover rate they have. Different
states require different adult-child ratios, but that doesn’t
mean that they are ideal. Ideally, for every seven infants, there
should be two adults. For every nine toddlers, there should be three
adults and for every seventeen preschoolers there should be two
adults.
Make sure that these adults truly love children.
It should be obvious. How do they interact with your child? Do they
kneel down and talk to them eye-to-eye? Are they able to understand
and respond to children’s gestures and cues? Do they seem
to be genuinely interested in the children and patient with them?
Remember the caregiver that you choose will be caring for your child
day in and day out for a long time. Your child should feel loved
and receive ample attention and care.
Once you have chosen a daycare facility, your
job is not over. You should always be monitoring the way that the
daycare is run and how your children respond to it. Be willing to
change if necessary, but be flexible enough to understand that it
will take some time for both you and your child to adjust. Give
it ample time, but once your child has had a chance to adjust, you
should take note of a few things. The first thing to note is the
activity of your child when you are there to pick her up. Is she
busy with an activity, playing with other children or does she run
up to you right away and cling to you? This could be a sign that
your child is not getting the attention he needs and that you may
need to start looking for a new daycare provider. The second thing
to note is the overall feel that you get while you are at the facility
or home. Is this a place where you would want to spend an entire
day? If it is, then you have found the perfect match. If not, then
don’t subject your child to a place where you wouldn’t
be happy. A second search is sure to bring better luck, especially
with the lessons you have learned from doing it once before.
Remember, though, that your child’s stability
depends on consistency. A constant turnover of daycare providers
can be very disturbing to children. So, take your time to evaluate
daycare providers and you are sure to have a long, happy relationship
with those who are caring for your little ones.
