Drinking Herbal Tea While Pregnant

A
common misconception among pregnant women, and many others for that
matter, is that foods and medicines which are made of “natural”
ingredients are safe to consume. This couldn’t be farther
from the truth, especially for pregnant women who also have to consider
side effects on an unborn baby. It is for that reason that all herbal
remedies should be treated just like any other medication. They
should be discussed with a doctor or midwife who knows your individual
circumstances.
Many doctors are concerned about the use of herbs
during pregnancy because they believe that there is not enough information
about them. Herbal teas are no exception. Herbs are not regulated
by the FDA and so it is hard to assess them in the same way that
traditional remedies are. The herbal teas are composed and prepared
in various ways that differ from one brand to another. This makes
it even harder to evaluate their effectiveness and safety.
Regardless of doctors’ opinions many women
swear by the effectiveness of herbal teas. There are various teas
that claim to relieve pregnant women of morning sickness, headaches,
heartburn and nausea. If you are compelled to drink these teas,
it is best to drink only those that are generally considered safe
for pregnant women, such as citrus peel, ginger and rose hip.
