Drinking Tap Water While Pregnant

Recent
studies have caused some to question the safety of tap water consumption
by pregnant women. Studies have shown a link between chemical byproducts
in tap water and miscarriage rates. Doctors and authorities have
not banned tap water for pregnant women just yet, though. Water
is very important for pregnant women, who need more than other adults.
"If people are worried, they should call their local water
utilities and find out if the level of trihalomethane is high,”
said Shanna Swann, chief of the reproductive epidemiology section
of the California Department of Health. Trihalomethanes are the
byproducts of chlorination and decaying plant material.
The EPA is concerned about the results of the
study. They are considering lowering the acceptable levels of trihalomethanes
from 100 micrograms to 80 micrograms. Until that happens, pregnant
women might consider drinking bottled or filtered water, but in
no case should they give up water altogether. The risk, if there
is one at all, is very small and insignificant when compared to
what could happen without water.
