Being
part of a family can be fun and fulfilling on many levels. Caring
for your family often starts with caring for yourself. The emotional
health of a family is dependant upon family health history, attitude
and communication.
When we know what it means to be emotionally healthy
we have an easier time figuring out how to create an atmosphere
of emotional health in our homes. Following is a general guideline
of what emotional health is:
People with good emotional health are in control
of their thoughts, feelings and behaviors. They feel good about
themselves and have good relationships. They can keep problems in
perspective. Striving to set an example of controlling your emotions
can help your family learn how to deal with their own emotions effectively.
First, try to recognize your emotions and understand
why you are having them. Learning how to sort out the causes of
sadness, frustration and anger in your life can help you better
manage your emotional health. Stress can come from situations such
as personal or work problems, having too much to do or too many
responsibilities, working too hard and being exhausted.
You can help your little one or teenager by recognizing
some of their own emotions and what gets them sad or frustrated,
then helping them to recognize this in themselves and showing them
how to appropriately deal with the trigger. Talking open and frankly
about situations within the family, community or in the world can
teach your child to not “bottle up” their feelings but
to express them in a healthy way.
Everyone’s body responds to stress by making
stress hormones. These hormones help your body respond to situations
of extreme need. But when your body makes too many of these hormones
for a long period of time, the hormones wear down your body -- and
your emotions. People under stress are often emotional, anxious,
irritable and even depressed.
If possible, try to change the situation that
is causing your stress. Relaxation methods, such as deep breathing
and meditation, and exercise are also useful ways to cope with stress.
These relaxation methods work for adults and juveniles alike.
