In
order to be able to better protect your baby from harm, as well
as to be able to better provide him with opportunities for learning,
you must first understand how babies learn. There are two main ways
babies learn: repetition and exploration. Exploration is one of
the ways in which babies learn that doesn’t have anything
to do with the parents or any other role models they may have. Instead,
this is something that comes naturally to babies. For example, you
may notice that by the time your baby can hold a rattle, she sticks
it immediately into her mouth. This is one of the methods of exploration,
and it is why babies put everything they come in contact with directly
into their mouth.
Exploration is also what makes babies investigate
every nook and cranny in your home, as well as the cause for babies
really enjoying items that aren’t toys even more than they
do toys. Understanding that babies are meant to explore their surroundings
can help you in determining what actions must be taken to safely
babyproof your house, as well as provide you with some ideas as
to things that are safe (but aren’t technically toys) that
you will allow your baby to play with, explore and learn from on
occasion.
