Being
a parent can be very rewarding, but even the best parent-child relationships
need a break every once in a while. Parenting is a demanding job
and every parent needs to have some time away from their child.
It’s good for your child to have time away from you too, believe
it or not. But, unless you are blessed with a lot of family nearby,
and even then, at some point you will probably find yourself needing
a babysitter. This can be daunting if you don’t happen to
know a lot of teenagers, but with a little time and preparation,
you are sure to find someone that you can trust and your children
adore.
The best way to find a babysitter is through word
of mouth. Ask your neighbors, friends and family members if they
know of anyone. Chances are they have used babysitters before and
can tell you not only who is available, but who is reliable and
trustworthy. You might also consider asking a doctor for referrals
or calling a student employment service. Another thing to consider
is swapping babysitting services with a friend or neighbor. This
is a great option for you, if it is available, because it doesn’t
cost anything and you have the peace of knowing that your child
will be well cared for. If all else fails, place an ad, post notices
on bulletin boards and check the classifieds.
Once you have a list of potential babysitters,
you will want to meet with them. Set up a time for them to come
to your home and meet with you and your children. Be prepared beforehand
with a list of questions to ask them about their experience and
knowledge of children. You should probably have an idea of the going
rate for babysitters in your area, as well. While you are interviewing
them, watch their demeanor, but be understanding of their comfort
level. You should be looking to see how well they listen to find
out if they will take this job seriously. During the interview,
you may want to bring your children in to see how they interact
with each other. Is she comfortable around babies? Do your children
seem to like him? Below is a list of questions to consider asking:
- How long have you been babysitting?
- What ages of children have you babysat?
- Have you taken any classes to help prepare you for babysitting?
- What kinds of things do you like to do to keep the children
entertained?
- What would you do to soothe and calm a crying baby or toddler?
These are just some ideas; you may also want to
ask them questions that are specific to your children and circumstances.
Once you’ve chosen a babysitter, or a couple
to alternate between, consider giving her a trial run. Invite her
to come over while you are at home. Let him watch the kids while
you are cooking or paying bills. The next time, have her watch the
children while you go shopping for a half an hour. Once you’ve
done this a couple of times, for progressively longer periods of
time, you and your children will feel at ease when you are gone
for an entire evening.
Searching for a babysitter takes some work, but
it will be well worth it to find someone you trust and that gets
along with your children. Remember that it does take time, so start
preparing long before you really need it and you will enjoy yourself
all the more when you do.
