Having Teeth Cleaned During Pregnancy

Many
women believe that they should avoid the dentist when they are pregnant,
however this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Dental visits
are just as important as ever, especially when pregnancy makes women
much more susceptible to gum disease.
The reason for this common misconception is that
expecting mothers are usually told that they cannot get x-rays.
Most dentists agree and will avoid doing an x-ray if possible. But
getting your teeth cleaned, especially during the second trimester,
has actually been shown to reduce your risk of pre term labor.
Whatever you do, don’t skip out on dental
visits during pregnancy. Your teeth may end up paying a severe price
later, if you do. The very small risk that could be present in dental
care is not substantial in comparison to the great benefits of maintaining
good dental health. Any treatment that does occur at the dentist
office, including routine cleaning, will be carefully decided upon
by you and your dentist.
