Everyone
knows that smoking is not a safe activity, especially during pregnancy.
Many are now coming to the realization that second-hand smoke can
be detrimental as well. But does it have any effect on an unborn
fetus? Studies show that it does. In fact being around people who
smoke can be nearly as hazardous for your baby as if you were the
one smoking.
Recent studies show that cancer-causing chemicals
present in cigarette smoke pass through the blood of pregnant women
through the placenta. These chemicals can cause genetic changes
and were found in umbilical cord blood of the babies studied. The
long tem effect of second-hand smoke on unborn babies is unknown.
It is currently being studied. When you are pregnant, it is best
to play it safe and avoid areas where people are smoking.
