Running a Fever During Pregnancy

When
you are pregnant, everything is a cause for concern. From simple
foods to over-the-counter medications, many pregnant women have
doubts about what is safe and what is not. So what do you do when
you get sick? When you are around sick people, you are bound to
get sick eventually, pregnant or not. How does that sickness affect
the development of your baby and can a fever, itself, cause any
harm? These are common concerns.
Most sicknesses will not have any effect on the
baby as they are often incapable of entering the placenta. When
it comes to running a fever, however, there have been conflicting
studies. The results of earlier studies (1960’s and 1970’s)
caused many to believe that a fever in excess of a 102 degrees Fahrenheit
could result in defects to the baby’s nervous system. But
recent studies show otherwise. Most doctors do not believe that
a fever will cause any harm to a growing fetus.
A high fever, especially when there are no other
signs of illness, should be reported to your doctor. It is best
to be on the safe side when it comes to your health. Fevers should
most definitely be treated. Acetaminophen works great and is safe
for use during pregnancy.
