Taking Antacids While Pregnant

Heartburn
is one of those dreadful rites of passage that pregnant women get
to go through. We laugh about it, but it’s no fun when you
are the one experiencing it. A large supply of Tums may come in
handy, but you might wonder if it is safe to take antacids when
you are pregnant and if so, how much is appropriate.
Like all other medications, antacids should be
discussed with your doctor or midwife. You might consider having
such a discussion before the need arises. When it’s burning,
all you want is relief. Your doctor will be able to recommend which
antacids will be best for you and how much to take of them.
There is some concern that excessive antacid use
could lead to iron-deficiency anemia in pregnant women, but most
doctors agree that they are harmless. To increase their effectiveness,
try taking them one hour after meals. Food helps the effects of
the antacid to last longer.
You can help to control and limit the amount of
heartburn you experience without using antacids. By simply avoiding
foods that cause you to have heartburn, you can pretty much wipe
it out completely. Small and frequent meals will also help to keep
heartburn under control.
