The
FDA has warned against the consumption of unpasteurized juices by
pregnant women, children, the elderly and anyone with a weakened
immune system. Unpasteuirzed juices are juices that have not been
treated to kill any harmful bacteria that could be present. They
are sold in bottles or by the glass, such as freshly squeezed orange
juice. Unpasteurized juice that is sold in a bottle is found in
the refrigerated section of the supermarket. By law it has to carry
the following warning label:
WARNING: This product has not been pasteurized
and therefore, may contain harmful bacteria that can cause serious
illness in children, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune
systems.
The bacteria that can be found in unpasteurized
juice are known to cause an illness called listeriosis. This same
type of bacteria is also found in deli or lunch meats, hot dogs,
and unpasteurized milk and milk products.
If you are unsure whether or not a juice has been
pasteurized, either don’t drink it or boil it in an open container
in order to kill any bacteria present.
