Toddlers
are such busy and curious creatures. They love to learn about
and explore the world they live in. Young children are very
inquisitive by nature and they learn through their senses.
They especially like to touch and taste everything that they
come into contact with. As frustrating as that can be for
parents, it is actually teaching them a lot about the world
they live in. Toddlers also learn through play. There is so
much that a young child would love to do, that finding activities
for toddlers to keep them busy is not very hard. It doesn’t’
take a whole lot of creativity either, so any imagination
used could only make the activity even better.
When choosing an activity for your toddler, use the environment
as your guide. If temperatures are warm outside, then you
could choose to do something that involves water. Children
love play with water, so anything from playing with water
balloons to swimming would be super fun for your little one.
Warm weather is appropriate for any number of outdoor activities.
You could go for a walk just to enjoy each other’s company
and your little one would be happy. Or for an interesting
variation, you could go on a nature scavenger hunt. Look for
different items like twigs, flowers and rocks. You could use
a walk as a time to learn about different things in the environment,
pointing out the names for the youngest children and explaining
them more in depth for older ones. Or you could use the walk
to help your child learn the sounds of the alphabet. For example,
you could make the goal of the walk to find five items that
begin with the letter s. Other fun outdoor activities during
warm weather include: going on a picnic, playing outdoor games
such as tag and hide-and-go-seek, or bike riding.
The outdoors don’t have to be off limits when the weather
is cold. You can still have lots of fun with your toddler
by dressing him or her appropriately. If you have snow in
your area, your child will love to play in it. Build a snowman,
make snow angels or have a snowball fight. If you have more
than one child, you could have a snowman building contest.
Or you could make a whole family of snowmen, one for each
member of your family. Don’t forget to take pictures.
Your children will love looking back on their creations. Snow
tag and snow hide-and-seek are fun as well. If it is raining,
put on your toddlers raincoat and galoshes and let him splash
in the puddles. You would be surprised at how such a simple
activity could capture their attention, but it does. Toddlers
are fascinated by puddles and mud.
When the weather is just too cold to play outside, there
are plenty of fun activities for toddlers to do indoors. Art
and craft projects are always a favorite of little ones who
love to make their own creations. You could also have an indoor
picnic, read some stories or have a puppet show. Let your
child put on the puppet show for a fun activity to nurture
their imagination.
It is not hard to think of activities for toddlers to do
from day to day. You can provide plenty of fun games and projects
to keep your child busy without spending a dime. Just look
around your house and neighborhood and let the environment
be your guide. Your child will have a ton of fun and will
most likely learn a thing or two at the same time.
