Parents
say and think it all the time: how does my baby fare when
compared to other babies? But this question is not one that
is easily answered, nor should it be. While it may seem normal
to compare your little one, and his or her developmental abilities,
to other babies, you are treading on very shaky ground when
you do this.
While you may be seeking reassurance that your baby is intelligent
compared to others, or you may be afraid that your baby is
behind others, the results of comparing your baby’s
development to other babies can not definitely determine where
your baby stands among others. This is because babies all
move at their own pace and what they can do or are doing at
a certain age is really no indication of how intelligent they
are.
All babies do what they want when they are ready. Whether
or not they are ready has nothing to do with ability, and
since they can’t talk much yet, they can’t exactly
tell you that they refuse to walk because they’d rather
be held. Likewise, they can’t tell you when they are
having difficulties learning to do certain things. And this
is why many parents rely on other babies as a gauge of what
their baby should be doing. But, the results of doing this
may lead them to incorrectly believe that their baby is extremely
behind or ahead of other babies when it may not be true.
Generally, thinking about your baby’s development too
much can lead to unnecessary worry or (in the case of believing
that your baby’s intelligence is superior to most others)
it can lead to a big letdown later. Instead, it is okay to
notice what other babies are doing at a certain age and ask
other parents what their experiences are and have been with
theirs. But, as any parent of more than one child knows, no
two babies are alike. Some will crawl and walk and cut teeth
extremely early, while others will do so late. But, it tends
to shock parents when the late walkers can carry on a conversation
while the early walkers are still babbling incomprehensible
one syllable words.
So, unless your baby has several signs that his or her development
is behind (and many doctors won’t even be concerned
until they are behind by months) most children, you shouldn’t
worry. If your baby does have many different indications that
they are developmentally behind, you can contact your doctor
to have a variety of optional tests run. But, if a baby is
in otherwise good health, it is probably that your baby is
simply a little behind the others.
So, enjoy your baby’s newfound abilities and developments
regardless of when they happen. And be sure to write them
down when they first occur, because you will want to remember
them when your next baby starts learning those things.
