If you become pregnant while breastfeeding an older child,
you might wonder if it safe to continue. There are many people
that will tell you to stop, including well-meaning friends
and family. Even caregivers have widely varying recommendations.
But nursing an older baby is perfectly safe during pregnancy.
In fact, there is no evidence to show that breastfeeding will
deprive your fetus of nutrients or harm the growing baby in
any other way.
Whether you continue breastfeeding or not is a personal decision.
There is no reason to feel guilty for your decision, no matter
what it is. You should know, however, that the pregnancy may
cause some changes to your milk. Many women report that their
milk supply starts to decrease around the fourth or fifth
month of pregnancy. If your older child is still under a year
of age, it is important to monitor his or her weight to make
sure that they are getting enough milk. The taste of your
milk may change as well. If this happens, you may notice that
your older child wants to nurse less often and may even begin
weaning early.
