Studies
have shown that exposure to wood smoke is not safe for pregnant
women and their unborn babies This is largely because the
smoke contains airborne lead, which can be ingested through
breathing. Lead exposure during pregnancy is associated with
children who have lower intelligence levels and more violent
behavior. It can also lead to hypertension and toxemia during
pregnancy.
It is important to note, however, that most of the research
studied families in economically challenged parts of the world.
The families still rely on wood burning stoves for cooking
and heat. It is unknown how much effect a simple campfire
could have on a fetus or its mother. You probably don’t
have to avoid camping during pregnancy, but if you are still
concerned about breathing in wood smoke you can try to stand
away from the direction the smoke is blowing. And by all means,
talk it over with your doctor.
