Premature babies or low-weight babies are becoming a larger
population in the modern age. While this situation is stressful
for the parents, technology and the baby market are helping
to meet the challenge and help bring the baby back to appropriate
health and development.
Buying clothes for a preemie has become easier as more stores
are offering this especially small size. However, keep in
mind that while your child (or one that you know) is in the
NICU, he or she will probably be wearing hospital issued clothing,
and it may be that by the time of release, normal newborn
sizes will be appropriate. And even if the child is low-weight,
he or she may still be long enough to need larger than preemie
sizes.
But in some situations buying clothes for a preemie becomes
necessary. Premature babies will need easy access clothing,
for hospital equipment, diaper changes and monitoring.
The clothing also needs to be versatile and warm, both for
home and the hospital.
Remember that you will be using many layers to keep your
little one warm. While you are buying clothes for a preemie,
purchase appropriately sized onesies, a sleeper, then a couple
more layers of clothing or blankets. Shoes won’t be
needed just yet, but booties and socks are a must to keep
those tiny toes from getting chilly. Make sure they are fastened
securely.
One thing to look for while buying clothes for a preemie
is clothing that says “NICU safe.” Usually sold
by the poundage (ie 1-3 lbs. Or 7-10 lbs.)
