Pregnant
women are always told not to do any heavy lifting. However
you may have a 20 to 30 pound load that refuses to be put
down. If you have a toddler at home, you know what I’m
talking about. There will undoubtedly be times when you have
to pick her up and carry her. The good news is your don’t
have to deny your toddler. You can pick him up and carry him
with relatively little concern.
Lifting heavy objects really poses little risk to your developing
baby. The risks involved with lifting are aimed at you. When
you lift heavy objects, you are at a greater risk of injury
for several reasons. First, your ligaments are stretching
and your joints are loosening. It is easier now to pull a
muscle or hurt your back. Second, your center of gravity is
shifting. It is harder to maintain your balance and much easier
to fall.
When the need arises, proper lifting can protect you from
injury. Make sure to bend your knees while lifting and let
your legs support the weight. While carrying around a toddler,
hold him or her close to your body. Taking these measures
will help you to meet your toddler’s needs without the
unwanted pain of a strained back or pulled muscles.
