People
of all ages can enjoy the spooky October holiday, whether
by trick or treating, going to parties or handing out candy
at the front door! But it is always important to keep in mind
Halloween safety, for older children as well as toddlers and
babies. Here are some helpful Halloween safety tips to help
you have a safe holiday!
- Face paint and makeup are always better than masks. Use
hypo-allergenic makeup. Remove it with cold cream rather
than soap and water, for the sake of young and sensitive
eyes!
- Sharp props aren’t a good idea. While you are out
trick or treating or celebrating at home, it can be dangerous
to have spears, swords or pointed wands that can poke a
child’s eye.
- Always use reflective materials on your clothing, costumes
and strollers. You want both you and your children to be
visible to cars along the street.
- Using a bright flashlight to illuminate the path ahead
is very useful when you have kids in tow. Just be careful
not to shine it in other trick-or-treaters eyes!
- Always obey traffic signals, both as a pedestrian and
a driver.
- Inspect your child’s candy bag before letting him
or her pick out a treat.
- Clear the path to your own front doorway, and make sure
the stairs are well lit.
- Infants and babies should never be allowed to eat popcorn
or hard candy. Choking is an emergency you don’t want
to face, on Halloween or any other day!
- Feed your toddler or child a good, hearty meal before
heading out to trick or treat or attend a party. You can
even make the dinner an especially spooky one, with a surprise
here and there! This way they are less likely to want to
eat all their candy the first night.
- If you take all your children to trick-or-treat, make
sure that you have enough adults to keep track of all the
children. If you are pushing a stroller and have a few walking
goblins (or witches or superheroes!) develop a buddy system
or use a toddler harness to keep everyone together.
