If
you have the responsibility of planning a baby shower, you
may be a little stressed and intimidated. But there’s
no need to worry, because this is something that should be
fun and comfortable for everyone: you, the guests, and the
mother-to-be! While it will take effort and organization,
there is nothing about planning a baby shower that you cannot
handle!
Here are some tips that have successfully been used before
by women planning a baby shower:
1. First of all, consider the personality and taste of the
most important person—the mom! Does she like small groups
of close friends, or does she have many acquaintances that
she would like to see and share her baby shower with? In every
decision, always remember who you are planning this for, and
it will be much easier to narrow everything down! It is always
easier if the mom-to-be knows that you are planning a baby
shower, so you can ask her specific questions. But if you
do want it to be a surprise, you can collaborate with a close
family member, like her husband or mother.
2. Is this going to be a co-ed or ladies only baby shower?
Traditionally baby showers are comprised of the expecting
mother and her closest female friends and family. But in today’s
contemporary age, many people are choosing to have barbecues
or parties that include the guys. What would the Mom like?
This decision will directly affect what games and activities
you pick while planning a baby shower.
3. Picking a theme may help a lot in the decorations and activities.
For example, if you know the gender you can plan a princess
themed baby shower, or Sesame Street, stork, superhero, trucks
and cars… the choices are endless.
4. Remember that an average baby shower lasts about 2 hours,
so you should plan about 2 to 3 games. Pick games that are
suitable for the amount of people you invite.
5. Send invitations about two weeks before the event itself.
You will need to decide what time of day is best for the baby
shower and where it should be held. Many expecting mothers
prefer to remain in the comfort of their own home during this
time, otherwise you can hold it at your house or somewhere
else comfortable and special.
6. When it comes to gifts, you can include a gift suggestion
list along with the invitations. What do the parents need
the most? It may depend on whether they have had other children
before. Sometimes onesies, booties and beanies—things
that are used on a day to day basis—are the most helpful
items. However, the parents may already have a full stocked
supply, but need something big like a baby crib or car seat.
In that case, ask for ten to twenty dollars from each guest,
and collect the money in a pretty basket or special envelope,
with a nice poem or picture. “We want you and your new
baby to have the best _______________ there is!”
7. Typically, planning a baby shower involves a potluck or
buffet style meal of veggie trays, pastries, etc. You can
take this route, or if the guys are coming, make it a barbecue.
You can plan a nice sit-down meal if you have an amount of
guests to comfortably fit around your dining room table.
8. Through all of the processes involved with planning a baby
shower, remember that the main point is give the mother-to-be
an enjoyable couple of hours visiting with her friends and
celebrating the coming birth. Let her know how much she is
loved and how supportive you and the guests are of this special
occasion! By making the atmosphere comfortable and sociable,
everyone will feel welcome and have a good time, no matter
how the table cloths and napkins match!
