Study: Low allergy diet for nursing moms may
reduce colic

MELBOURNE Australia -- When breastfeeding mothers
of colicky babies switch to a low-allergen diet, crying and fussing
may be reduced, according to Australian researchers at Royal Children's
Hospital in Melbourne.
Their study, published in the November 2005 issue
of Pediatrics, included exclusively breastfed infants less than
6 weeks of age with colic and their mothers. Colic was defined as
"distress exceeding 180 minutes per 24 hours on 3 days in the
week." Some mothers were put on a low-allergy diet that excluded
foods containing dairy, soy, wheat, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, and
fish, while other mothers in a control group were encouraged to
eat these foods, along with their regular diet.
Crying and fussing (per a 48 hour period) were reduced
40 percent in the experimental group and 16 percent in the control
group. The researchers suggest that longer periods of dietary restriction
may improve colicky babies even more, as it takes time to remove
all allergens from breast milk. Breastfeeding mothers are encouraged
to consult their health provider to discuss the most appropriate
diet for their family.
