Paisley gets first Baby Friendly university award;Raigmore
Hospital accredited
The University of Paisley Midwifery Directorate has become the first
teaching department to receive a UNICEF Baby Friendly award.
The University was awarded the Certificate of Commitment
at the Baby Friendly Initiative's 2005 annual conference in November,
in recognition of its work to ensure its students are equipped with
the knowledge and skills to support mothers to breastfeed successfully.
The Certificate is a key step on the path towards full Baby Friendly
accreditation and is awarded for the development of a curriculum
covering UNICEF's best practice standards and learning outcomes
for breastfeeding education.
The University could receive the full accreditation
in around two years' time when it has educated a cohort of students
according to the approved curriculum.
Professor Jack Rae, Dean of the University's School
of Health, Nursing and Midwifery, said: "To become the first
university in the UK to receive this UNICEF award is a massive achievement
and reflects the practical and real world skills taught to our student."
More Scottish successRaigmore Hospital in Inverness
has become the latest hospital to be accredited as Baby Friendly
following a successful assessment in October. This brings the proportion
of Scottish births in Baby Friendly hospitals to 58%.
