Helping your child participate in every holiday will both
introduce your family and country’s customs, but he
or she can learn about the values of life through days that
we have set aside to celebrate. For example, talk about the
things you are grateful for during Thanksgiving, the fun of
trying out something new with Halloween, and showing love
during Valentine’s!
Valentine’s activities for toddlers will of course
have no romantic bent like the holiday usually entails, but
you can show your little one how special it is to show your
affection for others. Toddlers are very fond of imitating
the habits of grownups, so when you know your toddler is watching,
offer a big, red heart to your spouse or friend and say, “Happy
Valentine’s Day!” or “I love you!”
When your child sees how happy it makes both of you, he or
she will be eager to try it out.
At this age, arts and crafts are lots of fun, but should
be kept simple enough so as not to instigate frustration.
Here are some fun Valentine’s activities for toddlers:
Valentine Postcard
Materials · Heavy white paper or postcard ·
Paper doily · Red or pink paint · Paintbrush
or sponge · Clear contact paper (optional) Directions1.
Place a paper doily on one side of a blank postcard, or on
a piece of heavy white paper folded to make a card. You can
hold the doily in place with a small amount of tacky adhesive
or a paper clip. 2. Paint or sponge over the doily and onto
the postcard beneath it. 3. Remove the doily and let the postcard
dry. 4. Cover with clear contact paper to give it a finished
look.
Valentine Heart
Materials · Pink construction paper · Scissors
· Red and white liquid tempera paint · Spoons
· Small rolling pin (optional) Directions1. Cut out
large heart shapes from construction paper; fold in half,
then open again. 2. Have your child use a spoon to dribble
red and white liquid tempera paint onto the heart. 3. Fold
the heart up with the paint on the inside; your child can
use his hand or a small rolling pin to press on the top of
the folded heart. 4. Open up the heart again to see the designs
the paint has made. 5. You can write on the unpainted side
of the heart, or glue it onto another sheet of white or red
construction paper to make a pretty Valentine's Day card.
You can also use your favorite sugar cookie recipe and have
your toddler help to push heart cookie cutters into the rolled
out dough. When the cookies are baked and cooled, frost a
few and have your child help decorate with sprinkles! Try
making each cookie for a specific person. “How should
we make Daddy’s cookie? What color do you think he would
like?”
Whichever Valentine’s activities for toddlers you choose,
both of you will have lots of fun spreading the love of this
holiday!
